Really good historical episodes of This American Life that you should probably listen to if you like American history are as follows (you can stream from their website):
“The Ghost of Bobby Dunbar,” about a couple who loses their kid in 1912 and finds him later…or DO they? Turns out, it was pretty easy to take someone else’s kid in 1912. So fucked up.

“Someone Else’s Money” - This whole episode about the health insurance industry is interesting, but act 2 traces how this country ended up with employer-purchased insurance. And it’s fucked up.

“Pimp Anthropology” - the history of Oakland, CA prostitution, sort of. Completely fucked up.
